ÇлçÇÐÀ§(Undergraduate):

1. Applicants must submit representative compositions of the past two years.

2. Applicants must demonstrate above-average ability in theory and ear training.

3. Applicants will be interviewed by members of the Composition Department in order to ascertain their knowledge of music and general musical culture, as well as competency on an instrument.

4. Applicants may submit examples of advanced work in music theory.

¼®»çÇÐÀ§(Graduate):

1. Candidates must submit at least four compositions in diverse media representative of their work during the previous three years, preferably including one work for orchestra.

2. Candidates are expected to demonstrate the following:

a. Competence and fluency in harmony and counterpoint (including chromaticism and imitative counterpoint).

b. Experience in writing pieces in traditional styles and forms (fugue, sonata, motet, etc.).

c. Competence in sight-singing.

d. Competence in melodic, harmonic, and contrapuntal dictation.

e. Some ability to read scores at the piano.

3. Faculty members will interview candidates in order to determine their general background and musical knowledge.

4. Applicants are encouraged to bring to their interview samples of their work in harmony, counterpoint, and music analysis.
