ÇлçÇÐÀ§(Undergraduate)

Prescreening CD

  • A sonata-allergro movement from a classical sonata
  • a major romantic work
  • one virtuosic etude
Audition
  • BAROQUE - A Prelude and Fugue or any other work containing a fugue by J.S. Bach.
  • CLASSICAL - Complete (All-Movements) sonata by Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert. The Mozart G Major Sonata, K. 283, and Beethoven Sonata, Op. 49 may not be used to fulfill this requirement.
  • ROMANTIC - A major solo work by a 19th-century composer. For example - Chopin: Ballades, Scherzi, or Sonata; Brahms: Op. 118 or 119 (complete); Liszt: Dante Sonata, Vallee d'Obermann or a Hungarian Rhapsody. Note: A Chopin Nocturne or Etude may not be used to fulfill this requirement.
  • 20TH CENTURY - A major solo work.
  • ETUDE - A virtuoso Etude by one of the following composers: Chopin, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Scriabin, Debussy, Bartok, or Stravinsky.
  • TRANSFER STUDENTS ONLY: Must present one additional virtuosic etude from Chopin, Liszt, Debussy, or Rachmaninoff.

 

´ëÇпø(Graduate)

MM and GPD applicants must submit a pre-screening CD. Repertoire includes:

  • a complete classical sonata
  • a major romantic work
  • one virtuosic etude


DMA applicants must submit a pre-screening CD along with their applications by December 1. The material on the recording should be a half-hour of music that represents your audition. A recording of a recital can be used if it was performed within the past two years. Selections on the recording do not have to be the same ones you will perform for your audition.

Audition

MM applicants must prepare a program of from 50 to 60 minutes which includes three style periods. A complete classical sonata, at major romantic work, and one virtuosic etude are required. Remaining works are to be chosen by the applicant. All works must be prepared in their entirety.

GPD applicants must prepare a recital program, 60 minutes in length, of repertoire representing at least three style periods and including at least two large-scale works.

DMA applicants must prepare a program of no less than 60 minutes' duration, representing at least three style periods, and including at least two large-scale works.


* Violin Àü°ø

  • Concerto from standard repertoire
  • Unaccompanied Bach - either Adagio and Fugue or 3 movements of a Partita
  • One concert etude from one of the following: Kreutzer, Rode, Dont, Gavinie, Paganini

 

 

* Cello Àü°ø

  • The first movement of a concerto from standard literature
  • Two contrasting movements from any Bach suite or Baroque sonata
  • One etude from one of the following: Duport 21 Etudes, Popper High School of Cello Playing, Piatti 12 Caprices

 


* Voice Àü°ø -CD Á¦Ãâ

ÇлçÇÐÀ§(Undergraduate):

Three classical selections are required, at least one in English and one in a foreign language. Selections must be memorized, and should show a variety of styles and tempi.

¼®»çÇÐÀ§(Graduate):

A short audio CD recording of two arias and a song (one in English) are required to be submitted along with the application for pre-screening. The voice faculty has posted detailed audition requirements for each program

 

* ÀÛ°î Àü°ø (Composition) -¾Çº¸ Á¦Ãâ

Composition majors must qualify in the music theory placement test at least for Theory I, and must demonstrate some keyboard proficiency.

Several compositions for various media which demonstrate the applicant's musical and creative development must be submitted with the application for admission. These compositions will be pre-screened in December. Applicants passing the pre-screening will be evaluated during our February audition period


* Flute Àü°ø

  • A complete Sonata by J.S. Bach OR a complete Concerto by W.A. Mozart(including cadenzas)
  • A solo work (unaccompanied) of the candidate's choice
  • A third, contrasting work of the candidate's choice (this can be a Sonata, a work for flute and piano, a concerto or an unaccompanied work).
  • Applicants are urged to perform repertoire which best represents their performance level and musical taste.
