Perth enjoys more hours of sunshines than
any other state capital in Australia and, although it is one of the
most isolated capital in the world, it is also one of the most picturesque,
with the magnificent Swan River meandering Quietly through it.
It is easy to see why
so many students are drawn to this unique corner of the globe. "[Perth]
has a winning combination of fabulous weather to enjoy the outdoor
life and lot of cultural attractions," points out Robynne Walsh,
CO-Director of Phoenix English Language Academy. "Perth has the
bluest skies - duck egg blue - so blue you have to take a second look
to make sure you are not dreaming."
Although Perth's population
of 1.3 million is relatively small in comparison to other state capitals,
it is large enough to ensure that a divers range of cultural and recreational
interests are catered for ion a safe and welcoming city.
Tim Bowyer, Director
of World English comments, "Students choose Perth because it
is a 'Goldilocks kind of place; not too big, not too small; not too
hot, not too cold; and definitely not expensive when you compare it
with Sydney."
As a city, Perth and
the surrounding metropolitan areas boast some of the most pristine
coastline in the world, which is ideal for swimming, surfing, sailing,
scuba diving and fishing. "The beaches have really white, soft
sand and you can find beaches within 20 minutes of the city that don't
even have one footprint of them," says Walsh. Perth is also fortunate
to have one of Western Australia's most popular recreational is lands,
Rottnest Island, just cars- just bicycles and lots of reef to snorkel
on."
The central area of
Perth, from Wellington Street to St Georges Terrace, with Hill street
to the east and Milligan Street to the west, is both compact and pedestrian
friendly.
Perth's two main shopping
centres are situated between Hay Street and Murray Street, while the
London Court Arcade, between Hay Street Mall and St Georges Terrace,
has a replica of London's Big Ben clock and shops specialising in
Australian merchandise.
The city plays host
to many spectacular events each year, including the Perth International
Arts Festival, Which showcases international talent in the fields
of music, theatre and film. The Gay and Lesbian Pride Parade, which
takes place in October, is also popular with students who, according
to Bianca Panizza, Acting Director at the Centre for English Language
Teaching at the University of Western Australia, find it "colourful
and entertaining". Other events include the Perth Royal Show
which takes place every September, and West Week, which celebrates
the foundation of Western Australia, in June.
Underwater World, to
the north of the city, has a tunnel aquarium displaying 200 different
marine species, from stingrays to sharks. For those students wishing
to get closer to some of Perth's indigenous marine mammals, sea-lion
swimming and dolphin and whale watching activities are organised regularly.
"[Many students say] the highlight of their stay is either surfing,
swimming with dolphins, getting in touch with aboriginal culture or
a combination of all three." says Bowyer.
Northbridge, which includes
the areas around James and Lake Streets, is the heart of Perth's cafe'
and club scene, with almost 40 establishment crammed into one square
kilometre.
"Northbridge comes
top of the list for nightlife." says Panizza, adding that the
"hip-e-club" in New castle Street is popular with student.
"[They] say the music always the same -70s and 80s stuff but
they love it because it is always packed and they make lots of friends."
With more restaurants
per capital than other city in Australia, visitors to Perth have a
vast array of dining options, ranging from exclusive bistros to authentic
cages, from steak houses to food halls - an Asian invention that has
proved a popular alternative to fast food. The Down Under Food Hall,
situated in the Hay Street Mall, has stalls offering a good selection
of chinese, Mexican and Thai cuisine. Although Australian cooking
is essentially a blend of Mediterranean, Asian and Californian styles,
the impact of the immigrant community is evident in the multitude
of eateries in Perth, which offer everything from Greek and Turkish
to Mexican and Lebanese flavours.
Agent viewpoint -
" Perth is beautiful city and the people are
very friendly. Swiss students particularly like the fact that when
it is winter in Europe. It is summertime in Australia. and they are
able to enjoy perfect weather. The beach is always popular with
students, as are excursions to the Pinnacles and Calgary National
Park. Students have also mentioned that the spring flowers in the
region are gorgeous. Perth is a fantastic destination for all ages
and one of the most reasonably priced in Australia."
------ Liz Hosner, AWT Travel, Switzerland
" For French student, Perth is exotic destination
and many European nationalities are represented in the good mix of
students. Being relatively small, the city offers students the opportunity
to have a truly Australian experience, and they enjoy cycling and
exploring their surroundings at their own pace. We tend to recommend
this destination to students aged between 17 and 20 years old, although
some past students have mentioned that they found it difficult to
obtain a visa."
------ Daniele Dumas, Geolangues, France
" Students choose Perth because it provides the
perfect opportunity to get to know the real Australia. There are few
other Spanish students [ there] and the good quality of education
means they can learn quickly. In their spare time, they like to walk
in the city and indulge in beach activities such as surfing and snorkelling
- Australians are crazy about sport. [Some students have said] that
Perth is a little too isolated and too far away from Sydney."
------ Brian Davy, International Educational
Consultants, Spain
